Synonym Showdown: Find Stronger Words as a Team
A synonym list is most useful when learners can compare choices in context and discover how meaning changes with register or precision. Synonym Showdown gives the class a target word and its context sentence, then asks students to produce alternatives and explain which ones fit.
One big question, investigated: take a stance, explore the source, learn the words, argue it out, play a review game, and land with the Verdict.

How it works
- 1
The game generates a target word with a context sentence. Students submit synonym ideas on their phones during a race.
- 2
Each distinct suggestion is checked once, while each student's list is tracked separately. One student's word does not block another learner from earning credit for it.
- 3
Accepted answers show their points and quality; rejected words show a reason. A word found by only one student earns a rare-word bonus.
- 4
At the end, the class sees a word wall with unique discoveries marked and can complete the Use it in a sentence speaking beat.
Frequently asked questions
- Can the same synonym count for multiple students?
- Yes. The game checks each distinct word once but tracks student lists separately, so one learner's answer does not prevent another person from earning credit.
- What is the rare-word bonus?
- A valid synonym earns an extra bonus when only one student found it. The word wall marks that discovery so the class can discuss why it fits.
- How are weak synonyms handled?
- The checker returns a quality and feedback for each answer. Accepted suggestions receive points, while unsuitable words are crossed out with a reason.
- How does the round end?
- The class reviews the collected word wall, with unique discoveries highlighted, then students use a selected synonym in an original sentence.
