Hot Seat Speaking Game for ESL Classes

Many vocabulary games ask students to recognize a word before they have to explain it. Hot Seat turns recall into live speaking: one learner guesses while classmates describe the same secret word, one clue at a time. It works in a classroom or over Zoom because the word is delivered privately to phones.

Practice explaining meaning with simple definitions, examples, and circumlocution.

Build listening confidence as the hot-seat student connects clues and makes a spoken guess.

Give every learner a clear speaking turn instead of relying on volunteers.

How it works

  1. 1

Choose a topic and start a round. One student takes the hot seat and cannot see the word; every other student sees the word and its definition on a phone.

  2. 2

The teacher identifies the next clue giver. That student gives one spoken clue, then the turn moves to another classmate.

  3. 3

The hot-seat student listens and guesses aloud. The teacher taps Got it when the word is correct or Pass to reveal another card.

  4. 4

Each turn lasts 60 seconds. The teacher can add time, and students rotate through the hot seat so the class gets repeated speaking practice.

Frequently asked questions

What can the student in the hot seat see?
The hot-seat phone gives an instruction to listen and guess aloud, but it does not show the secret word. Other students see the word and definition on their own phones.
How does the clue order stay fair?
Classmates take turns giving one spoken clue at a time. The teacher advances the clue giver, so one confident speaker cannot take over the whole round.
Can we use Hot Seat in an online class?
Yes. Students join on their phones while the teacher shares the activity screen. The word stays on phones, which also works when classmates are watching through Zoom.
What happens if the hot-seat student is stuck?
The teacher can tap Pass to move to another card. Got it records a successful guess, and the next turn can rotate to a different hot-seat student.
